Aspectual Shift as Type Coercion Draft 1
نویسنده
چکیده
The phenomenon of aspectual shift has been discussed by several people over the last ten years using an analogy with type coercion in programming languages. This paper tries to take the analogy literally and to spell out the details for an analysis of some common kinds of aspectual shift in English under the innuence of some types of temporal modiication. A model theoretic basis for this kind of type coercion is supplied, and an illustrative fragment is worked out.

Aspectual Shift as Type Coercion1
The phenomenon of aspectual shift has been discussed by several people over the last ten years using an analogy with type coercion in programming languages. This paper tries to take the analogy literally and to spell out the details for an analysis of some common kinds of aspectual shift in English under the influence of some types of temporal modification. A model theoretic basis for this kind...
متن کاملProcessing events: Aspectual coercion in self-paced reading and magnetoencephalography
Introduction. That semantic type-mismatch can have measurable effects on processing has been robustly demonstrated for complement coercion, where an event-selecting verb coerces an entity-denoting object into an event predicate (1) (e.g., McElree et al., 2001). A similar shift has been proposed for aspect when a punctual verb combines with a durative modifier, yielding an iterative interpretati...
متن کاملTense, aspect and coercion in a cross-linguistic perspective
Aspectual operators like the progressive in English change the aspectual nature of the eventuality. The meaning shift is grammaticalized by means of a morphological marker or a syntactic construction. But sometimes aspectual shift is hidden. These are cases where an eventuality description is coerced in order to repair the mismatch between the aspectual nature of the eventuality and the aspectu...
متن کاملType shifting in construction grammar: An integrated approach to aspectual coercion*
Implicit type shifting, or coercion, appears to indicate a modular grammatical architecture, in which the process of semantic composition may add meanings absent from the syntax in order to ensure that certain operators, e.g., the progressive, receive suitable arguments (Jackendo¤ 1997; De Swart 1998). I will argue that coercion phenomena actually provide strong support for a sign-based model o...
متن کاملAspectual Coercion in Non-native Speakers of English
This study examined the processing correlates of aspectual coercion among native and non-native speakers of English. For native English speakers, results suggested that the processing delay associated with aspectual coercion is minimal. Aspectual coercion was perhaps cognitively easy to perform. By contrast, non-native speakers of English from unlike first language (L1) backgrounds differed in ...
